One of your first tasks, - individually and collectively - will be to navigate the initial barriers – real and imagined – that stand in the way of you starting off on the transition journey. We call these ‘The Seven Buts’.

This really is not an issue. Funding is a very poor substitute for enthusiasm and community involvement, both of which will take you through the first phases of your transition. Funders can also demand a measure of control, and may steer the initiative in directions that run counter to community interests.
We’ll show you how you can make sure your process generates an adequate amount of income. We’re not talking fortunes, your Transition Town won’t be floated on the Stock Market, but, as an eco-village designer Max Lindeggar told me years ago, “if a project doesn’t make a profit it will make a loss.”
Transition Town Totnes began in September 2005 with no money at all, and has been self-funding ever since. The talks and film screenings that we run bring in money to subsidise free events such as Open Space Days. You will reach a point where you have specific projects that will require funding, but until that point you’ll manage. Retain the power over whether this happens… don’t let lack of funding stop you.

Realmente esto no es un problema. Las subvenciones son un sustituto muy pobre para el entusiasmo y la participación comunitaria, y las dos os llevarán a través de las primeras fases de vuestra transición. Los donantes o instituciones que aportan subvenciones también pueden requerir medidas de control, y puede ser que lleven la iniciativa en direcciones que vayan en contra de los intereses de la comunidad.
Os mostraremos cómo podéis asegurar que vuestro proceso genere un nivel adecuado de ingresos. No estamos hablando de fortunas, vuestra Iniciativa de Transición no cotizará en la Bolsa, pero, como me dijo hace años el diseñador de ecoaldeas Max Lindeggar, "si un proyecto no genera beneficios, generará pérdidas".
La Ciudad en Transición de Totnes empezó en septiembre 2005 sin dinero, y se ha auto-financiado desde entonces. Las charlas y proyecciones de películas que organizamos nos dan dinero para subvencionar eventos gratuitos como los Días de Espacio Abierto. Llegaréis a un punto dónde tendréis proyectos específicos que necesitarán fondos, pero hasta entonces os arreglaréis. Conservad la energía si sucede esto… no dejéis que os pare la falta de financiación.

There is a fear among some green folks that somehow any initiative that actually succeeds in effecting any change will get shut down, suppressed, attacked by faceless bureaucrats or corporations. If that fear is strong enough to prevent you taking any action, if the only action you’re willing to take is to abdicate all your power to some notional “they”, then you’re probably reading the wrong document. On the other hand, Transition Towns operate ‘below the radar’, neither seeking victims nor making enemies. As such, they don’t seem to be incurring the wrath of any existing institutions.
On the contrary, with corporate awareness of sustainability and climate change building daily, you will be surprised at how many people in positions of power will be enthused and inspired by what you are doing, and will support, rather than hinder, your efforts.

2. Pero ellos no nos permitirán...
Hay un temor entre alguna gente "verde" respecto a que de alguna manera cualquier iniciativa que realmente da resultado en efectuar cualquier cambio será clausurada, reprimida, atacada por anónimos burócratas o grandes empresas. En caso de que el miedo sea lo suficientemente fuerte como para evitar la adopción de cualquier medida, si la única acción que estáis dispuestos a tomar es renunciar a todo vuestro poder a costa de un teórico "ellos", entonces probablemente estéis leyendo el documento equivocado. Por otro lado, Iniciativas en Transición (Pueblos, Ciudades...) opera "por debajo del radar", ni buscando víctimas ni haciendo enemigos. Como tales, no parecen estar despertando la ira de las instituciones existentes.
Por el contrario, con la consciencia corporativa de la sostenibilidad y el cambio climático construyéndose a diario, os sorprenderá cuántas personas en posiciones de poder se entusiasmarán e inspirarán por lo que estáis haciendo, y apoyarán, en lugar de obstaculizar, vuestros esfuerzos.

We’ll go into this in more detail in Step 3 of the 12 steps, but in essence, you’d be exceedingly unlucky to encounter any “turf wars”. What your Transition Town initiative will do is to form a common goal and sense of purpose for the existing groups, some of which you might find are a bit burnt out and will really appreciate the new vigour you will bring. Liaising with a network of existing groups towards an Energy Descent Action Plan will enhance and focus their work, rather than replicate or supersede it. Expect them to become some of your strong allies, crucial to the success of your Transition.

3. Pero ya hay grupos ecologistas (verdes) en esta población, no quiero pisar sus iniciativas...
Vamos a entrar en esto en más detalle en el Paso 3 de los 12 pasos, pero en esencia, seríais excesivamente desafortunados si encontraseis algún "conflicto territorial". Lo que vuestra Iniciativa en Transición hará es formular un objetivo y un sentido de propósito común para los grupos existentes, algunos de los cuales podríais encontrar algo quemados y realmente apreciarán el nuevo impulso que aportáis. Servir de enlace con una red de grupos existentes hacia un Plan de Acción para un Descenso Energético mejorará y centrará su trabajo, en lugar de duplicarlo o sustituirlo. Esperad que se conviertan en algunos de vuestros fuertes aliados, algo crucial para el éxito de vuestra Transición.

One could easily be forgiven for thinking this, given the existence of what we might perceive a s an apathetic consumer culture surrounding us. Scratch a bit deeper though, and you’ll find that the most surprising people are keen advocates of key elements of a Transition Initiative - local food, local crafts, local history and culture. The key is to go to them, rather than expecting them to come to you. Seek out common ground, and you’ll find your community to be a far more interesting place than you thought it was.

4. Pero en esta localidad nadie se preocupa del medio ambiente de ninguna manera…
Un@ podría ser perdonad@ fácilmente por pensar esto, dada la existencia de lo que quizás percibamos como una apática cultura de consumo rodeándonos. Rascad un poco más a fondo y encontraréis que las personas más sorprendentes son partidarias entusiastas de elementos clave de una Iniciativa en Transición - alimento local, artesanía local, historia y cultura locales. La clave es ir a ell@s, antes que esperar que vengan a vosotr@s. Buscad los puntos comunes, y encontraréis que vuestra comunidad es un lugar mucho más interesante de lo que pensabais.

It may be too late, but the likelihood is that it isn’t. That means your (and others’) endeavours are absolutely crucial.
Don’t let hopelessness sabotage your efforts - as Vandana Shiva says, “the uncertainty of our times is no reason to be certain about hopelessness”.

5. ¿Pero seguramente es demasiado tarde para hacer algo...?
Puede ser demasiado tarde, pero la probabilidad es que no lo sea. Eso significa que vuestros esfuerzos (y los de otras personas) son absolutamente cruciales.
No permitáis que la desesperanza sabotee vuestros esfuerzos - como Vandana Shiva dice, "La incertidumbre de nuestros tiempos no es razón de estar segura de la desesperanza".

If you don't do it, who else will? It matters not that you don't have a PhD in sustainability, or years of experience in gardening or planning. What’s important is that you care about where you live, that you see the need to act, and that you are open to new ways of engaging people.
If there was to be a job description for someone to start this process rolling it might list the qualities of that person as being;
That, in truth, is about it… . You are, after all, about to design your own demise into the process from the start (see Step#1), so your role at this stage is like a gardener preparing the soil for the ensuing garden, which you may or may not be around to see.

6. Pero no tengo los requisitos adecuados…
Si tú no lo haces, ¿quién lo hará? Lo que importa no es que tengas un doctorado en sostenibilidad, ni años de experiencia en horticultura o planificación. Lo que es importante es que te preocupes por donde vives, que veas la necesidad de actuar, y que estés abiert@ a nuevas maneras de involucrar a la gente.
Si hubiese una descripción del puesto de trabajo para alguien que comenzase este proceso, se podría listar las cualidades de esa persona como:
Eso, en verdad, es de lo que se trata... Te encuentras, después de todo, a punto de diseñar tu propia desaparición en el proceso desde el comienzo (ver Paso 1), así que tu papel en esta etapa es como un jardinero que prepara la tierra para el jardín resultante, del cual puedes o no estar alrededor para verlo.

As the quote often ascribed to Goethe goes, "whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!" The experience of beginning a Transition Town certainly shows this to be the case. While the idea of preparing your town (or city, hamlet, valley or island) for life beyond oil may seem staggering in its implications, there is something about the energy unleashed by the Transition Towns process that is unstoppable.
You may feel overwhelmed by the prospect of all the work and complexity, but people will come forward to help. Indeed, many have commented on the serendipity of the whole process, how the right people appear at the right time. There is something about seizing that boldness, about making the leap from 'why is no-one doing anything' to 'let's do something', that generates the energy to keep it moving.

Very often, developing environmental initiatives is like pushing a broken down car up a hill; hard, unrewarding slog. Transition Towns is like coming down the other side – the car starts moving faster than you can keep up with it, accelerating all the time. Once you give it the push from the top of the hill it will develop its own momentum. That's not to say it isn't hard work sometimes, but it is almost always a pleasure.

7. ¡Pero no tengo la energía para hacer eso! Como la cita a menudo atribuida a Goethe dice, "Lo que puedes hacer o soñar que puedes hacer, empiézalo. ¡La audacia tiene genio, poder y magia!" La experiencia de comenzar una Iniciativa en Transición sin duda muestra que este es un caso así. Si bien la idea de preparar tu pueblo (o ciudad, aldea, valle o isla) para la vida más allá del petróleo puede parecer sorprendente en sus consecuencias, hay algo acerca de la energía desatada por el proceso de Iniciativas en Transición que es imparable.
Puedes sentirte abrumad@ por la perspectiva de todo el trabajo y la complejidad, pero la gente acude en apoyo. De hecho, muchos han comentado sobre los descubrimientos casuales en todo el proceso, cómo las personas adecuadas aparecen en el momento adecuado. Hay algo acerca del aprovechamiento de esa audacia, de hacer el salto desde "¿por qué nadie hace nada?" a "vamos a hacer algo", que genera la energía para mantenerlo en movimiento.
Muy a menudo, el desarrollo de iniciativas medioambientales es como subir empujando un coche roto hasta una colina: duro, ingrato, cuesta mucho trabajo. Iniciativas en Transición es como venir del otro lado - el coche empieza a moverse más rápido de lo que puedes aguantarlo, acelerando todo el tiempo. Una vez que se le da el impulso desde la cima de la colina, desarrollará su propio impulso. Eso no quiere decir que no sea trabajo duro a veces, pero casi siempre es un placer.
